The Valley Grocery, located in the epicenter of the Keene Valley Hamlet, was originally built in 1912 as a car garage.  It was called the Adirondack Garage until 1921 when the town of Keene used it to store highway equipment. 

 

It was until 1946, where the building was purchased and turned into a market.  It operated as an IGA market until 1969.

 

January 1, 1969 Richard L. Hall and his wife Joan Hall purchased the business and renamed it to the Valley Grocery.  Dicky Bird, as many knew Richard as, and Joan ran the business with help from their three children, Rich, Ron and Carol. For years, the Valley Grocery provided more than groceries to the community and its members.  For many, the "Valley Gro" was the first job for many highschool students.  In 2014, Dicky Bird passed, and Carol, his daughter, continued to provide the community with its services. 

 

In March of 2018, the unthinkable happened, the Valley Grocery had caught fire. Not only did the community, but the region band together to contain the fire.  The greatest thank you is owed to our surrounding community volunteer fire departments and its members - Keene Valley, Keene, Elizabethtown, Lake Placid, Upper Jay, Jay, Wilmington, and Ausable Forks.  

 

The Valley Grocery rebuilt and opened 11 months later in February 2019.  With the same footprint but an updated building.  The Valley Grocery continues to grow and diversify its offerings to the community. 

 

Today, the Valley Grocery may be missing the old wooden floors, but is full of a mixture of Local, Artisanal, Spam,  and everything in between!
